It would be a Saturday morning in 1976 as a young boy, I was doing some house chores when these two set of couples tickled my ear drums with very nice lyrics, rhyme and rhythm. I did not know when I started tapping my feet to the beat and swaying my head from side to side to catch the music waves from from my Dad’s grundig grammar phone.
I pick up the album to learn their names as Agnetga Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson & Björn. It became my regular and favorite band and group. Before long, though I was less than 10 years old at the time, I knew most of their songs by heart.
We would play them especially on Saturdays when my Dad was home and it made very good journey companion. We would drive for over 1,500kilometers and for a couple of days journey, but we didn’t feel it. ABBA was there with us all the way.
My best was and still is Move on. I also like Dancing Queen, Does Your Mother Know, Fernando, Water Loo, One of Us, Money, Money, Money, Angel Eyes, As Good As New, Bang-A-Boomerang, Chiquitta, Dum Dum Dibble, Eagle, One Man, One Woman…
The ABBA GROUP the discography of Sweden pop music group ABBA consists of eight studio albums, two live albums, seven compilation albums, three box sets, four video albums, seventy-three singles and thirty-three music videos.
What is very interesting is that the music sounds as though it was just released last year. No one would believe that music released in the 1970s and 1980s would be sounding as good as new in 2018!
My favorite like I said would be move on. Before now, I think it was Eagle. I hardly knew the entire lyrics but I was happy to sing the chorus along with it.
It was very gratifying to identify with other ABBA lovers in school. We would compare notes and exchange song books on this great music band that was the highest foreign exchange earner for their country Sweden.
It was very intriguing to see how two couples musical band would gel so nicely and would be so successful over the years bringing joy and happiness to several families.
So more than forty years later, I am still playing ABBA music like they were released yesterday.
Amazingly, the rhythm caught my son also who just took to ABBA just like I did back then. He’s just 7 but he caught the bug when he was just four years old. Once, I played ABBA so much in the car he asked me if they had some videos that he could watch.
He, like me also back then can now sing these songs joyfully and his best, wait for it, is Eagle.
It seems to me that the music played by ABBA would not go away as long as there are still people who enjoyed it back then and still find joy in listening to the music today.
It gets the young people curious enough to listen to it a couple of times and before you know it, they are already loving the music and falling in love with it all over again.
Unfortunately, the group has to split up and they tried severally to come back with little success.
They also tried to make some changes but it did not work out as Old Friend’s Do…
The Visitors to several countries had done rendition in Spanish, German and other languages. You could hardly define an emotional mood that ABBA hadn’t played music on.
I wonder what the four of them are doing right now. I know they’ve won several awards and have come together for some concerts but I’m just thinking what might have been of this group if they remained together singing great songs up to their 60s, 70s, and 80s years of age and if their children could collect the music baton from them.
I don’t know the fact of what went wrong, though we heard rumors, infidelity may have drifted them apart and they couldn’t fix the broken hearts, broken hearts could not mend.
It’s getting to a New Year and my son asked me, if I could kindly play Happy New Year the morning of 1st January 2019.
Now, that’s a promise and he could take to the bank to make more Money, Money, Money…
